Purpose: Consumer issues
Aim/Objective/Mission: The Union Ministry of Food and Consumer Affairs functions to ensure food security in India and to support the Consumer Movement. To have better administration the Ministry is divided into three departments 1) Department of Food and Civil Supplies deals with procurement, movement, storage and distribution of foodgrains. The PSUs Food Corporation of India and Central Warehousing Corporation work for implementation of Government Schemes for the sector. ii) Department of Sugar and Edible Oils monitors and implements policies for the development of sugar, vegetable oil and vanaspati industries. The department operates through two administrative bodies. Directorate of Sugar, Directorate of Vanaspati, Vegetable oils and Fats. iii) Department of Consumer Affairs functions for consumer protection, commodity price management and regulation, internal trade regulation, standards of Weights and Measures, administration of essential commodities act and Bureau of Indian Standards.
